Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 26, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Oakworks Software, LLC ("Oakworks," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you visit Santa Clarita Valley Voter Guide at santaclaritavalleyvoterguide.com, look up your ballot by address, or send us a message, a correction, a candidate, or a news story.

Santa Clarita Valley Voter Guide is a nonpartisan public service. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information in three ways: information you give us directly, information recorded when you look up an address, and information collected automatically when you use this site.

  • Information you give us: your name, email address, and phone number, and what you send through our forms. On the contact form that can include a mailing address; on the correction and add-a-candidate forms, how you know the candidate, the details you propose, and any photograph you upload; on the news form, the story you are sharing.
  • Address lookups: the address you enter, your IP address, your browser and device type, and the districts and candidates the lookup found.
  • Information collected automatically: your IP address, browser and device type, referring page, and the pages you view, gathered through standard server logs and the tools described below.

With form submissions we keep a one-way scrambled version (a hash) of your IP address rather than the address itself, so that floods of spam can be spotted without keeping a record of where each person wrote in from.

2. Address Lookups

The address you enter is used to find your districts and show the races and candidates on your ballot. We keep a record of each lookup, including the address, your IP address, and your browser details, to run and improve the guide: to find addresses the guide could not place, to fix district errors, and to protect the site against abuse.

Most addresses are matched against address data published by Los Angeles County. An address that data does not hold is sent to Google's geocoding service to find where it is. Google handles it under its own privacy policy.

We never sell or publish the addresses people look up.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to run the guide and keep it accurate.

  • Showing you the races and candidates on your ballot.
  • Reviewing corrections, candidates, and news stories before anything on the guide changes, and contacting you if we have a question about what you sent.
  • Responding to the questions and reports you send us.
  • Understanding how visitors use this site so we can fix problems and improve it.
  • Protecting this site against spam, fraud, and abuse.

4. Information You Send for Publication

Corrections, candidate details, photographs, and news stories you send may be published on the guide once a person has reviewed them. Your own name, email address, and phone number are used to review your submission and are not published.

5. Website Analytics

This site uses Matomo, a website analytics tool that Oakworks hosts on its own servers, to count visits and understand which pages people find useful. It may set a cookie on your device. Analytics data is not shared with advertising networks or data brokers.

6. Session Recording

This site uses session-recording tools from LogRocket and uxlens to help us find bugs and see where the guide is hard to use. While you use the site, these tools record how you interact with it, such as the pages you view, where you click and scroll, and errors your browser reports. They may capture what you type into the site, including an address you enter to look up your ballot.

These recordings are processed by LogRocket and uxlens on our behalf and are handled under their own privacy policies. We use them only to improve the guide, and never to advertise to you. These tools may set cookies or use similar browser storage.

7. Spam Protection

Our forms use hCaptcha to block automated spam submissions. hCaptcha receives limited technical information about your browser in order to tell people apart from bots, and handles it under its own privacy policy.

8. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in the limited circumstances described below.

  • Service providers: website hosting, email delivery, address geocoding, spam protection, and the analytics and session-recording tools described above, each of which may use your information only to provide services to us.
  • The people who review submissions: so that corrections, candidates, and news stories can be checked before they are published.
  • Legal compliance: when required by law or by valid legal process.

9. Cookies

This site sets a session cookie that keeps the forms working and protects them against forged submissions. The tools described above may set cookies of their own.

Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies. You can still read the guide and look up your ballot without them, although the forms may not work.

10. How Long We Keep Information

We keep address lookup records and the submissions and messages you send for as long as we need them to run and improve the guide, and longer only where the law requires it. You may ask us to delete your information at any time.

11. Your Choices

You control what you share with the guide.

  • You can read the guide without entering an address or filling in any form.
  • You can block or delete cookies in your browser.
  • Access, correction, and deletion: write to us through our contact page and tell us what you would like to see, change, or remove.

12. California Residents

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If you are a California resident and you ask us to tell you what information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, we will honor that request to the extent we are able. Write to us through our contact page to make a request.

13. Children's Privacy

This site is intended for adults and for young people old enough to take part in the political process. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, write to us through our contact page and we will delete it.

14. Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect the information we hold, including encrypted connections to this website. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee that information sent to us over the internet will never be intercepted.

15. Links to Other Sites

This site links to third-party sites, including candidates' campaign websites and social media accounts and official election sites. We do not control those sites, and this Privacy Policy does not apply to them. Review their policies before providing information.

16. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continuing to use this site after an update means you accept the revised policy.

17. Contact Us

Questions about this Privacy Policy, or about the information we hold, can be sent through our contact page.

About This Guide

The Santa Clarita Valley Voter Guide is an independent, nonpartisan resource dedicated to helping SCV residents make informed decisions at the ballot box. We provide factual, unbiased information about candidates and measures without endorsing any candidate or party.

Candidate information relies on submissions from candidates, campaigns, and members of the public. Ballot and district information comes from official ballot documents and public records from the LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. The address you enter is used to show the candidates relevant to you. We keep a record of lookups to run and improve the guide, and never sell or publish it.
